First Multifamily Development in Decades Breaks Ground on Merritt Island, Signaling Market Shift

The yet-to-be-named development in Merritt Island is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2027

Woodfield Development closed on $51.2 million in construction financing May 1 for a new 296-unit market-rate apartment complex at 555 Fortenberry Road in Merritt Island.

The rare project — the first multifamily project to be built there in decades — is expected to lead to future redevelopment within that corridor of unincorporated Brevard County.

Ross Abramson, multifamily and mixed-use development partner at Raleigh, North Caroline-based Woodfield, told Orlando Business Journal the firm is in the final stages of approval with plans in place to begin construction “within the coming weeks.”
